On a Greek island during the 1912 war, several people are trapped by quarantine for the plague. If that isn't enough worry, one of the people, a superstitious old peasant woman, suspects one young girl of being a vampiric kind of demon called a vorvolaka.

Notes:

• The shooting script for Isle of the Dead is actually quite different from the movie as filmed. Its pivotal character is completely eliminated from the film, and several other major characters and supblots are also either missing or very changed.
• After filming began on Isle of the Dead, the project was put on hold due to a leg injury to Boris Karloff. The unit began work on The Body Snatcher, then when that movie was completed and released, work resumed on Isle of the Dead.
• Much of the movie's atmosphere (not to mention it's title) was inspired by the 1880 painting Isle of the Dead by Swiss artist Arnold Bocklin.
